Malayisan Airplanes
A Malaysia Airlines flight disappeared without a trace while on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8. The weather was perfectly clear, and there was no distress signal from the cockpit when the plane vanished from the radar. A huge search operation looked through the Indian Ocean, but the plane was never found.
Volcano
The eruption of the Bardarbunga volcano, located in Iceland, began at the end of August and still continues. The volcano has been unique in three of the following ways: the enormity of its lava field, the amount of dangerous sulfur dioxide gases it has released, and the unbelievable amount of sinking that has affected its crater.
Adnan
In 1999, a murder case was brought up and put under the microscope this year thanks to Serial, which is a non fiction podcast that unravels a story on a weekly basis. As of now, Adnan Syed is serving a life sentence for murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee when they were both in high school. When the case started being investigated, lot of things didn’t add up. There were no eye-witnesses of Syed, who has been trying to prove his innocence for years. Also, his attorney, Cristina Gutierrez, failed to interview a witness who claimed she was with him at the time Lee was murdered.
Sinkholes in Siberia
A 115-foot hole was found in Siberia’s Yamal peninsula, after its unexplained explosion in July. Two other mysterious sinkholes showed up in Russia’s north not long after. Scientists believe that gas explosions beneath the surface were causes of the sinkholes, but they haven’t been able to confirm that theory in certainty.
Gold Ridge
1,400 gold coins, worth an estimated $10 million were buried for more than a century. They were dug up in a California backyard in 2014. The middle-aged California couple who discovered the gold remain anonymous. Apparently, the coins had been stolen from the U.S. Mint in San Francisco in 1901.
Celebrity Hack
In late August, an anonymous 4chan user began posting hundreds of private photos of celebrities that were stolen from their hacked iCloud accounts. The victims were mostly female celebrities who were high-profile, such as: Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlet Johansson, Kim Kardashian, Kate Upton and McKayla Maroney. Apple verified that the hackers had obtained the images by means of a “targeted” attack, and the FBI is investigating the case.
Aliens
Scientists say they found the moon of an alien planet, which would be the first time we’ve ever seen an “exomoon.” The issue with this is that we’ll never really know if that’s what astronomers saw. Researchers found the possible exomoon using gravitational microlensing, which is a technique that detects distant objects, regardless of the light they emit.
Stonehenge
Underground mapping technology revealed that Stonehenge did not always stand alone. Under the 5,000-year-old, including shrines, burial mounds, deep pits and other unexplained artifacts. Stonehenge was previously believed to be an isolated structure, so this discovery has thrown researchers off completely.
Sony Hack
Sony is still reeling from a huge hack that exposed embarrassing company secrets and led the the cancellation of a movie release. The FBI accused the North Korean government of carrying out the attack, saying that it was done was in retaliation for The Interview, which is a Sony film starring James Franco and Seth Rogen that chronicles the assassination of Kim Jong-Un. However, there isn’t enough concrete evidence to prove that.
Down in Mexico
Several high school students disappeared in Mexico after police stopped them from traveling on their way to a protest. Police reportedly handed over the students to a drug gang, who investigators claim killed them. However, their bodies have never been found, so no one knows for sure what happened to them.
